Defense & On-Ball Tips - Basketball
Offense gets highlights, but defense wins games, especially in Rec and Pro-Am where one stop can swing the outcome.
On-ball defense fundamentals
- 1Hold LT/L2 to enter defensive stance. This is non-negotiable. Never guard someone standing straight up.
- 2Stay between your man and the basket. Do not reach, do not lunge. Just stay in front.
- 3Mirror their movement. Move with the left stick only. Do not use turbo unless they use turbo. Matching speed prevents blow-bys.
- 4Contest every shot. When they go up, hold RS up or press Y/Triangle to contest. Even a light contest drops their percentage significantly.
Steal timing
Steals in basketball are all about timing. Spam pressing steal will get you called for fouls.
Help defense
Knowing when to help and when to stay is what separates lockdowns from liabilities:
- Help on drives when the ball handler beats their man. Step in to cut off the lane, but rotate immediately after.
- Do not help on the perimeter if someone is guarding a 3PT shooter. Leaving them open is a death sentence.
- Recover fast after helping. Sprint back to your man. The defense collapses when someone does not recover.
- Communicate in Rec/Pro-Am. Call out screens, switches, and help. Even saying “screen left” changes outcomes.
Shot contest mechanics
Dynasty AI Defense Assist
Dynasty's AI Defense Assist mirrors your right stick to your left stick on defense, so your hands contest automatically as you slide. This makes on-ball defense significantly easier. Keep it on.
Common defensive mistakes
- Jumping on pump fakes. Hold RS up instead of pressing Y. This contests without leaving your feet.
- Using turbo the entire possession. You will drain stamina and get blown by in the fourth quarter.
- Ball watching. Always know where your man is, even if you are watching the ball handler.
- Over-helping. If your man is a shooter, stay home. Do not help unless the drive is directly at the basket.
