Fades & Step-Backs - Basketball
Fades are one of the most effective ways to score when closely guarded. A well-timed fade creates separation that no defender can fully contest. Here is how to master each type in basketball.
Types of fades
Middy fades (the money maker)
The mid-range fadeaway is the highest-percentage contested shot in basketball. It is nearly unguardable when done right.
- 1Face up with the ball near the elbow or free-throw line.
- 2Hold LT/L2 and move the left stick laterally, not toward the basket.
- 3Press shoot while moving. Your player leans away from the defender.
- 4Time the release at the top of the jump. Dynasty AI Auto-Green releases at the perfect-release window for you.
Dynasty AI Auto-Green + AI Turbo Fades
AI Auto-Green releases your shot at the perfect-release window while you focus on creating the shot. For fades, enable AI Turbo Fades and set AI Auto-Green Fades to control moving-shot timing specifically.
3-point fades
Same mechanic as middy fades, but from beyond the arc. These are harder to time but devastating when they hit.
- Need a 75+ 3PT rating minimum to hit these consistently.
- Best from the wings and corners, less effective from the top of the key.
- Works best with Kobe or Luka jumpshot bases, which have fade-friendly animations.
- Deadeye and Blinders badges are crucial for contested 3PT fades.
Step-backs
The step-back creates 3-4 feet of separation instantly. It is the go-to move for creating open 3-pointers.
- 1Dribble toward the defender to close distance.
- 2Pull RS down while holding LT/L2. Your player steps back.
- 3Immediately press shoot before the defender recovers.

AI Instant Quickstop conflict
If you have AI Instant Quickstop enabled in Dynasty, it can cancel your fade animation. Disable it when practicing fades, or use a fade-specific Dynasty setup.
